Jonathan Shariat and Cynthia Savard Saucier, the authors of the book argues that, design sometimes cause tragedies.

In order to avoid tragedy, they said that we need to have imagination for another.

In details, what kind of tragedies has happened before? Then what we can learn form them more?

Let’s get started.

Summary

  • Creator-centered design causes a lot of tragedies. Therac-25, the radiation therapy machine killed people due to its design. The election system held in U.S. had confused design, then let many people to vote for another candidate.
  • Sometimes design make people sad and lonely. Facebook provided the picture of dead child with celebration decoration. Those are due to the lack of imagination to many types of users.
  • Not only designers, but those who are in charge of product management, needs to have imagination for many kinds of users and the ability to understand and share the feeling of another.
  • We can see a lot of cases that companies provide impolite design and dark patterns, the design to cheat user on purpose. Even though it may increase the revenue, it will hurt a brand reputation, then decrease the revenue. In order to avoid this tragedy, companies need to have ethics.

Discussion

  • Leader always need to have imagination for minority, then make design for them too. If decision is made by council system, the . In that case, leader need to mention about minority and make treatment for them. Even if it increase the cost per revenue, it should have big impact for company branding in the long term.
  • People easy to become selfish unconsciously, then make Creator-centerd design. We, especially who has right to make decisions, control himself/herself and and keep User-centered view point.
