Hatching is an artistic technique used in Western art. In French, it is named hachure, which is a technique artists use to create tonal or shading of the drawings. Sometimes, hatching techniques apply to painting or scribing as well.

So, what hatching exactly is?

Hatching is closely spaced parallel lines. It is also used in monochromatic heraldic representations to indicate what the tincture of a “full-colour” emblazon would be.

The hatching technique is used by draftsmen, engravers, and other artists. These artists use hatching when those mediums do not allow them to do blending by painting brush or pen to represent shading and light effect. It consists of filling in the appropriate areas with a number of close parallel lines. By controlling the number of lines, and the length of each particular line, the artist is able to achieve the different intensities of effect in their art piece.

When these lines are crossed by others, the process is known as cross-hatching.
