Without a doubt, one of Junji Ito’s most refined works of art is Uzumaki. The reason why Uzumaki is so popular and is considered by many other authors to be a manga that cannot be imitated in its art-style and storytelling is because of the impact it leaves. While most mangas, books, or other mediums rely on jump scares to submit their name as horrifying or daunting, Junji Ito takes a different approach, with his story-telling revolving around the Terror of the Unknown kind of style. This draws the reader in and keeps him interested until he gradually spirals into a predicament of terrifying events. Coincidentally, the word Uzumaki literally translates to Spiral in the Japanese language.

Brief Overview

The Story of Uzumaki follows a small town in Japan by the name of Kurouzu-cho. At the beginning, there are certain instances that indicate that the town might be haunted. But after we delve deeper into the story, we find out that the town isn’t haunted by ghosts, witches, or zombies, but by something much more bizarre. The town of Kurouzu-cho is being haunted by a spiral.

Our protagonist, Kirie Goshima, a high school student, and her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, are at the center of our tale as they work to solve the mystery of the curse and spare their town from oblivion. The shape of the spiral transforms into many different forms and terrifies our characters in a disgusting way. However, it is this disgust, along with the variety of horrifying occurrences, that will leave you more invested in this manga.

Irreplicable Art Style

When I first read the manga, I was completely overwhelmed by the stunning illustrations in the manga. Some of the panels in the manga are absolutely marvelous. Junji Ito's art is unique, so no matter where you look in the medium, you won't find anything that even remotely resembles it. In Uzumaki, the artwork is highly detailed and has a strong emphasis on geometrical shapes like spirals, etc. This makes it even more unique and peerless.

Junji Ito’s art and his masterclass in story telling are two of the main reasons why he is regarded as one of the best mangakas of his time.

A Spine-chilling way of Horror

The thing I appreciate most about Junji Ito is that he is a master of subtle, psychological horror. It seems like most horror manga authors are going for explicit torture porn these days, yet they still don’t come close to the level of creep factor in Ito’s work.

Uzumaki displays its characters in such a way that they leave a lasting impression on the reader. At the beginning of the story, we see our characters descend into madness, but at the end, their bodies distort into something so horrible and revolting that it is impossible to explain. Uzumaki’s use of psychological horror, along with its grotesque imagery, makes for a bone-chilling experience.

Conclusion

If you are a true horror fan or just someone trying to get into this genre , I would recommend that you read Uzumaki, as this petrifying and inimitable experience will haunt you for long after reading this.
