Someone just volunteered for a completely robotic dental surgery — and it went perfectly

Hours ago, a robot implanted two 3D-printed teeth into a woman’s mouth without the help of a dentist. The procedure which took place in China was making up for a shortage in cosmetic dentists in the country with hopes that this could be the future of dentistry.

Before surgery took place, the robot was programmed with all of the necessary information to carry out the procedure successfully — and so it did.

Information included the depth and angled required for a successful implantation. The robot was tested to be sure the movements were correct. Not only did the robot successfully carry out the procedure, but noted to perform with high precision. The procedure took an hour, tops and though the medical staff was in the room to monitor the process, there was no need to step in.

South China Morning Post reported that while around 400 million people need dental implants in the country, only about one million are done each year.

While having these robots will increase service rates, the technology isn’t with us in the U.S. so finding a (human) qualified dentist for dental implants is highly recommended.
