A Georgetown, Texas woman by the name of Zona Nelson was charged with theft by deception, a three-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Officials with the Williamson County and Cities Health District told the sheriff’s office they believed Nelson was providing false information on several applications for health benefits totaling about $40,584, by claiming she had no income and no bank accounts, the affidavit said.

Nelson allegedly had a joint checking account with her ex-husband where money was deposited on a monthly basis. She had access to money from 2014 to 2017 that, if she would have reported it to the health district, would have disqualified her from indigent healthcare, the affidavit said.

The total loss to Williamson County was estimated at $40,584, according to the affidavit.
