The Radical Film Team We Need Now
An interview with the folks behind The Eyeslicer
On top of my region-code-locked Blu ray player is a USB stick for the first season of The Eyeslicer, a tightly curated show of one-hour episodes, made from various short films of the experimental, underground, and post-Adult Swim variety. It initially came across my radar via a listing at a New Orleans Film Festival event, leaving me confused by interested and intrigued. At the time, it was touring the world and only alternatively available for streaming via a password-protected platform.
Very hush-hush, I was on the outside struggling to get a glimpse of the inside.
Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell brought this circus-like show to life from crowdfunding and sheer idealism, something that shows up well in their official 2018 zine. Their enthusiasm, their ideas, and their love for all movies can be in this franchise-heavy era of Hollywood are absolutely infectious.
And hopefully, we all catch a germ or two from them.
Dan and Vanessa were kind enough to take some time and answer a few questions about the series, their model of distribution, and the revolution in moviegoing that could come:
