After weeks of low numbers at the box office leading pundits to make doomer remarks regarding the future of theaters, Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and Disney’s Cruella have provided the necessary numbers to push forward with nothing but hope.

Here’s the Zing Movie Math:

  1. A Quiet Place Part II (Paramount) — 3 day: $48.3M / 4-day: $58.3M (n/a)
  2. Cruella (Disney) — 3 day: $21.3M / 4-day: $26.5M (n/a)
  3. Spiral: From the book of Saw (Lionsgate) — 3 day: $2.275M (-55%)/ 4-day: $2.9M / $20.4M Total
  4. Wrath of Man (MGM/UA) — 3 day: $2.1M (-28%) / 4-day: $2.9M / $22.76M Total
  5. Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney) — 3 day: $2M (+20%) / 4-day $2.57M / $51.4M
  6. Demon Slayer (Sony/Funimation) — 3 day: $837k (-36%) / 4-day: $1.06M / $46.7M Total
  7. Godzilla vs. Kong (WB) — 3 day: 852k (-39%) / 4-day: $1M / $98.3M Total
  8. Dream Horse (Bleecker Street) — 3 day: $652k (-18%) / 4-day: $817k / $1.9M Total
  9. Those Who Wish Me Dead (WB) — 3 day: $545k (-72%) / 4-day: $641k / $6.8M Total

With A Quiet Place Part II besting the performance of TENET in its opening weekend, and Cruella & A Quiet Place Part II providing a combined 4 day estimated total of $84.3 million, it is clear that big movies aren’t just back…but the big screen as well.

Another thing to note is that women are leading the box office, both in film and in ticket sales: Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II feature strong female leads, and women lead in ticket sale demographics for each film by 61% and 52%, respectively.

With these incredible feats it will be interesting to see if the box office continues to rise, as audiences continue to determine if they are okay with returning to theaters (with many preparing to relax mask-wearing guidelines) to see theatrical-first films as well as simultaneous releases.

(Movies in theaters this week include Spirit Untamed and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
