Zingword is Partnering with the Chartered Institute of Linguists!

We are joining efforts with CIOL to bring positivity and progress to the translation world.

We have some exciting news! We’ve recently established a partnership with the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), the UK’s leading membership body for language professionals. As a part of our collaboration, we’re giving all CIOL members and visitors early access to Zingword — just find us on their Meet our Partners page and grab your invitation! 😉👇

CIOL is also hosting our webinar on Zingword’s goals and how translators can best approach platform marketing! One of the things we really love about CIOL is that their webinars are free for attendees and open to non-members as well — so, join us on December 9 at 12 pm CEST for an hour-long chat on how we plan to help freelance translators. 📆

If you’re already promoting your professional translation services on the Zing, or looking to learn more about awesome translators’ organizations, we’d like to introduce you to the marvelous ways CIOL has been supporting translators in their professional journeys.

What exactly is CIOL?

CIOL is a UK-based organization that supports language practitioners in their careers and certification. It was established in 1910 by Sir William Lacon Threlford “with the aim of addressing the lack of expertise in modern languages among British businessmen involved in foreign trade.” Throughout the past century, CIOL has become a multi-layered and international organization, with several specialist divisions.

CIOL currently has over 7,000 members in 50+ countries.

What can CIOL do for you?

The CIOL’s Translating Division is dedicated to providers of professional translation services, and is the CIOL’s largest division. It’s run by a committee of diverse translation experts, and organizes CPD events for both members and non-members. These events cover all manners of specializations and are free to attend — all you need to do is find a topic you care about, register, and drop it into your calendar:

CIOL also provides translators and interpreters with professional diplomas that are internationally recognized. They offer:

With the Zingword partnership, the CIOL is now also providing freelance translators with an early access invite to our equitable platform that aims to raise the standards in the translation industry.

Lastly, the CIOL has demonstrated a lasting dedication to the mental well-being of their members and linguists in general. In addition to other written resources they offer, they have also published translator-specific guides on stress management and mental resilience — crucial topics for the translators of today.

What can I gain from a CIOL membership?

There are several CIOL membership types for linguists offering or aiming to offer professional translation services. All types include a variety of benefits, such as:

  • professional support — including indemnity insurance and income protection
  • training and development — including CPD opportunities and special interest groups
  • networking
  • the CIOL Advantage — including discounts on various products and services
  • and much, much more!

To join CIOL, you will need to apply online for the membership type that best suits your needs. You can find all the information on CIOL memberships right here 👇

An additional benefit of certain membership types includes an assessment and qualification for a chartership, i.e. a publicly recognized form of certification that is considered to be the international gold standard in professional validation. Zingword will soon be introducing an option for translators to display their chartered status — more information on that coming soon!

We are honored and excited to be one of CIOL’s partners, and are looking forward to the upcoming collaborations we will be undertaking with them. This organization, that cares about translators’ standards, takes care of their professional development and well-being, and offers various opportunities, echoes our own values and the goals we want to achieve for freelance translators. CIOL makes a difference for linguists, and we’re delighted to be joining them on that road.

If you’d like to see how Zingword itself is helping translators’ careers, pop down to the CIOL website and find your invite! 🎫
