In just the UK around 6o people are killed and 500 injured from being “doored” each year. Around the world, it must be thousands. Without “protected mobility lanes” and the growth in micromobility use, this road toll can skyrocket.
The Dutch have had a solution for decades — the “Dutch Reach”, using your hand furthest from door to open it — this makes you reach and turn your body and you are more likely to see approaching bike or scooter riders, rather than open the door in front of them.
It’s really good to see the campaign by UK Cycling, supported by Uber to address this issue. Also good to see Lyft supporting Dutch Reach too.
