More than 10,000 City of Sydney residents own and use electric scooters. The high numbers indicate demand for affordable, fun, and practical inner urban sustainable mobility.

It seems that the City of Sydney has finally found a mode of transportation that is both environmentally friendly and extremely popular among its residents: privately-owned electric scooters.

Despite the fact that it is illegal to ride these scooters in the city, it hasn’t stopped an estimated 10,000 of them from being sold and ridden on the streets, and with few complaints or reports of incidents!

The scooter craze has taken the city by storm, with people of all ages and backgrounds jumping on board. From hipsters cruising the streets with their trendy scooters to middle-aged moms running errands on their trusty two-wheeled steeds, it seems that everyone has caught scooter fever.

At first, TfNSW and city officials were hesitant to allow these scooters on the roads, citing concerns over public safety and the potential for accidents. But the residents of Sydney were not deterred and continued to flock to the scooters as a convenient and fun way to get around the city.

The success of these scooters has not gone unnoticed, and the NSW government is now considering making them legal to ride. This would be a major win for both the environment and the people of Sydney, who have clearly shown their enthusiasm for this new form of transportation.

Trials of Lime Bikes with NSW Opal card users indicate scooters might even be part of NSWs public transport.

In the meantime, however, it is still illegal to ride these scooters in the city. So if you’re thinking of getting one, make sure to wear a helmet, keep it off the roads and only ride it on private property. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll be able to see these scooters zipping around the streets of Sydney legally!
