Tragic London Death Highlights Need for Cities to Allocate More Space to Sustainable Transport

A great opinion piece by Ben Fox after the tragic death of English YouTube and TV Presenter Emily Hartridge.

The tragedy of her accident underlines how cities are built around cars with little protection for pedestrians, cyclists and new human-sized mobility devices like scooters.

This accident was the UK’s first reported death between a motor vehicle and an electric scooter. While the headlines have been about the perils of electric scooters, analysis of the UK’s road statistics shows the huge toll of car users, cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists.

As cities seek to move to zero emissions, there will be huge growth in human-sized vehicles — cities will need to take the European lead and start allocating more protected space to pedestrians, cyclists and other personal mobility device riders.
