According to Google, people watch over 1 billion hours of video in Chrome every week, much of which is done via mobile.

Watching videos, alongside social networking, research and messaging are likely the root causes for data exhaustion. The good news however, is Google Chrome with Data Saver to reduce your data consumption while you watch whatever you want. Here’s an example, 67% saved!

How Data Saver works

Instead of loading a full web page on your android phone, the site is first compressed on a server before downloaded to Chrome on your device, thereby reducing the data consumption on your end.

For video, Google says Data Saver will save you as much as 50 percent on data by viewing a “lightweight version” of the videos you watch.

It’s even better on Android 7.0 Nougat / Android N!

With the Android 7.0 upgrade , this feature lets you specify the apps that do and don’t have access to your mobile internet connection while your screen is off. The less apps functioning at a time, the longer your data will last.

To enable Data Saver…

  • Open the Chrome app
  • Tap the (three dots).to open the menu and select settings
  • Under “Advanced,” tap Data Saver.
  • Switch the setting on.

If you’re on a slow connection, Data Saver will simplify the page to save data and make the page load faster. To see the original page, tap Show original.

Once you’ve done this, video and web pages will be compressed on servers before downloading to your phone, helping you save data.
