Data products and data mesh are the “talk of the town” in the data governance and management space. A data product is a set of prepared data or information that is easily consumed by a wide set of consumers. Data products drive value by better enabling specific data-driven use cases, implementing data governance strategically, and rationalization the data landscape. This point of view will briefly introduce what a reference data architecture is, introduce a specific reference architecture for data products, present a specific AWS-version of that architecture, and conclude with a brief case study.

What is a reference data architecture?

A reference data architecture is a high-level blueprint that guides the design and implementation of solutions that contain a data component. It provides an overview of the principles, guidelines, and standards that define how data is collected, stored, integrated, and put to use in business systems and IT infrastructures. At the heart lies a diagram that depicts the foundational, reusable components of the data infrastructure, such as data integration, processing and storage.
