In a recent game against the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made headlines with an impressive behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce. Following the game, Kelce had some humorous remarks about the play and his role in it.
During a lighthearted interview with the NFL Network, Kelce jested about the play’s execution. “You know, Patrick’s got that distinctive voice,” Kelce said, imitating Mahomes’ voice. “When he called the play, it came out a bit muffled. I was trying to understand what he was saying as I approached the line, and before I knew it, the ball was snapped.”
Kelce continued, “I noticed him signaling towards the sideline, so I was trying to assist. By the time I looked over, he was mid-throw, almost like a still photo from a sports card, and delivered the ball right to me. It just happened to be the right time and place.”
The spectacular pass quickly went viral, drawing praise from various quarters, including Kelce’s older brother, Jason, who recently retired from the Philadelphia Eagles. On X (formerly Twitter), Jason Kelce shared his enthusiasm, posting, “This guy actually pulled it off!! Magic Mahomes,” and later added, “Now that it’s been done in the preseason, I need more cowbell,” referencing a popular SNL skit.
Mahomes described the pass as a spontaneous move, though he noted that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had previously suggested trying out such unconventional throws. Mahomes had practiced the behind-the-back pass, including a successful attempt to Isiah Pacheco, but hadn’t used it in a game setting before.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid commented that he’d be open to Mahomes trying the pass again, as long as it results in a successful completion. “You’ve got to stay optimistic. It’s done all the time in basketball, so it’s not too surprising behind the back,” Reid said.
Although Mahomes indicated that he might not make a habit of using the pass, he acknowledged the excitement it generated. “It probably looked pretty cool, but I haven’t had a chance to see it yet,” Mahomes reflected after the game.
