Dear Hillary Clinton,

My name is Gerard Mclean, living in Englewood, Montgomery County, Ohio. I’m writing you 100 letters, one for each day between your nomination and election. This is the seventeenth. The others can be found in your office mailbox or online at 100HRC.com

I think we should all pay our fair share into a Universal Health Care fund. The individual mandate as a tax is a good idea that I support. The problem with the mandate is it is unfair to us in the 50–64 demographic. It is unbalanced and way out of whack with what our “fair share” should be. It assumes that we have not already paid large sums into a health care system covering ourselves and our kids.

The individual mandate is gutting our bank accounts that we now must rely on to live in retirement with any degree of dignity. After the health insurance companies have consumed our available cash, it will gut our home wealth long before we have a chance to reach Medicare Age.

This is simply math, Hillary. The wages we are making stacked against the costs we are expected to pay or even the increasing IRS penalties ramping up to the “working years” we have left until a reasonable retirement age, are untenable.

Just as the interest-only, no money down, negative balance, refinancing home loans of the ’00s saw the huge crash of the economy in 2008, we will see another economic crash in 5–8 years; the term under your administration. You will be blamed. The crash will have been foreseeable as evidenced by my letter here.

I would gladly lend you my calculator as we discuss, over coffee, the net cost of living under the current ACA and how it is eroding our very near futures. We need UniversalCare now, not after millions of us are living in the indignity of squalor after a lifetime of contributing to what we were promised as the bright future of the United States of America.

I still have hope, Hillary. But it is waning fast.

Regards,

Gerard McLean
