Do catchy titles like 10 Travel Books Written by Women, or 5 Tips to Travel Solo When You’re a Woman, ring a bell?

Gender issues and sexism in travel writing have been discussed many times by many writers and readers (see this discussion on Matador Network; French translation available on Medium).

I am a woman and I am a travel writer. I made a vow: to do my part to make it change.

So whoever you are, man or woman, travel writer or reader with a passion for travel writing,

welcome to 4WD!

A free magazine, roaming the world to collect what women have to say about travel and travel writing.

Why?

1. To improve women travel writers visibility

Giving visibility implies enforcing freedom of writing and publishing. Ergo, 4WD must not be a secluded, Medium-only collection.

If you are a woman who writes about travel or if you know a woman who does, share that work here. You can publish or republish it on 4WD, or just publish a short introductory post that includes an external link to wherever it was published.

2. To do it worldwide.

4WD must not be a first-world only / English-speaking only / white-feminism only collection of pieces.

Pieces written in any language are welcome on 4WD. And if you want to offer a translation for a piece, from any language to any other language, you are welcome too. Make sure the author of the original piece is clearly identified and credited for the content you are translating. Make sure you have the legal right and/or author’s agreement to translate it.

3. To discuss gender issues and sexism in travel writing.

If you want to speak out and share your thoughts, you are welcome to do so on 4WD.

Discuss. Debate. Share. Participate. Be a part of it!

How to Proceed?

Submit your piece. It will fall into one of three tabs (yep, let’s keep it simple):

  • Travel Stories. Original (or republished or translated or external link to) travel stories written by women.
  • On Travel Writing. Original (or republished or translated or external link to) discussion, debate, thoughts about gender issues or sexism in travel writing as a genre.
  • Reviews. Your review about something you’ve read that is relevant to this collection (a piece written by a woman, a piece about women travel writers, a piece about gender issues in travel and travel writing).

English and French are the only two languages I speak. I have therefore also written it in French. Any offer to translate this very post into another language is welcome.

If that initiative works, I’ll be soon looking for editors to manage the pieces. The most obvious reason is that I won’t be able to read posts in differents languages and will have to work on a trust basis at first. But I also just wish to throw this 4WD idea on the table, and then let it be cooperatively managed. If you’re interested in giving me a hand, give 4WD a nudge on Twitter or contact me via my profile.

Oh, and any suggestion to make this idea a better idea, is welcome in the comments below!

Sincerely,

C.I.D
