We organised a 2 week-long remote design jam (hackathon) around data sharing through Account Aggregators. It was sponsored by Facebook and executed in partnership with Sahamati, Parallel Labs, Digital India Collective for Empowerment and CIIE.CO.

We had 9 teams consisting of designers, product managers, founders, policy experts and facilitators. This year’s industry participants were Razorpay, Rupeek, Groww, Savemo, EarlySalary and Scripbox. We also had students participating from NID, BITS Pilani and Srishti Institute as well as folks from YLT Fellowship, Trilegal and Perfios AA.

Each team was given a persona and a fintech use case like lending, expense management or portfolio management. You can view a sample persona here.

The Design Jam’s Objective

‘How might we design a trustworthy UX for an individual to share data using AA?’

The Design Jam Format

  1. Two real-time 3-hour workshops with participant teams. (thanks to Zoom breakout rooms and Miro boards)
  2. Eight days of asynchronous collaboration on WhatsApp along with design and policy mentoring sessions
  3. Final design presentations

This design jam format originates from our partner TTC Labs.

Few interesting design ideas from the jam

Team: Oink-1

Use Case: Expense Management app

Persona: Vasanth (Trendsetter)

Oink-1 uses conversational UI to solve the challenge of trust and explainability of Account Aggregators.

Team: Oink-2

Use Case: Expense Management app

Persona: Riya (Cautious)

Oink-2 uses trust markers to increase comfort. It also provides alternate ways of data sharing and educates users about the pros and cons of each way.

Team: EMI Monk-1

Use Case: Consumer durable loans app

Persona: Tejas (Aspirant)

EMI Monk-1 uses cultural artefacts like memes to explain the idea of Account Aggregators. Because, why should all fintech apps be serious?

Team: EMI Monk-2

Use Case: Consumer durable loans app

Persona: Raghu (Survivor)

EMI Monk-2 uses the idea of video stories to replace FAQs that explain the concept of Account Aggregators to the users.

Team: Instamoney-1

Use Case: Personal loans app

Persona: Raghu (Survivor)

Instamoney-1 uses universal navigation to track the loan application progress and integrates contextual video tutorials.

Team: Instamoney-2

Use Case: Personal loans app

Persona: Tejas (Aspirant)

Instamoney-2 brings in the idea of data negotiation i.e. shows a potential increase in the borrowing limit when more data is shared.

Team: Moneybox-2

Use Case: Portfolio management app

Persona: Riya (Cautious)

Moneybox-2 uses alternate terms like ‘auto sync’ instead of Account Aggregator to avoid jargons. The app requests to sync the user’s data to provide personalised recommendations based on their long term goal.

Team: Cashlend

Use Case: SME loans app

Persona: Parijat (Follower)

Cashlend introduces trust markers and time markers to indicate the ease of using Account Aggregators for data sharing.

The design jam ended with a feedback session from B G Mahesh, co-founder of Sahamati, for all the design ideas that were presented.

We would like to thank all the participants for their time and effort. We also thank all the mentors and our partners for helping us execute this event successfully.

Our next steps include refining the design ideas and testing them for usability. Based on the insights from testing, a design playbook for data sharing in financial services would be published.

Future of Data Sharing:

‘Future of Data Sharing’ aims at designing a playbook for consented sharing to enable financial services in India. The objective of this research is to develop a design toolkit with the upcoming public infrastructure Account Aggregators as the main theme in focus. The toolkit will host resources and assets around designing better user experiences for data sharing and data portability.

Future of Data Sharing is sponsored by Facebook and executed in collaboration with D91 Labs, DICE, Parallel Labs, and TTC Labs
