Located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States, Fort Washington is a distinctive census-designated place and suburban enclave neighboring Philadelphia. As of the 2010 census, its population was recorded at 5,446 residents.

Before the dawn of the American Revolutionary War, Fort Washington’s landscape was shaped by the arrival of German immigrants, including Philip Engard, who journeyed in 1728. Securing a parcel of 100 acres, Engard settled in an area that would later be christened Susquehanna Road and Fort Washington Avenue. Over time, this locale became known as Engardtown, with its main thoroughfare initially dubbed Engardtown Road. The historic Engard Family Home, constructed in 1765, still stands as a testament to this era, listed among Upper Dublin Township’s esteemed historical properties.

The pages of history turned decisively during the Revolutionary War’s Philadelphia campaign when General George Washington and his Continental Army found respite in what is now Fort Washington. This followed their defeat at the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777, just before their legendary march to Valley Forge. The Emlen House, erected in 1745 by Quaker George Emlen, served as Washington’s headquarters during this pivotal period.

In December of that same year, the Battle of White Marsh unfolded on Fort Washington’s grounds, where British and Continental forces clashed. General William Howe, leading the British, surveyed the American lines from the bell tower of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church. Today, the echoes of this historic confrontation resonate within the confines of Fort Washington State Park.

Tragedy struck Fort Washington on July 17, 1856, when a devastating train collision near Sandy Run station claimed numerous lives, including many children from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. This catastrophe left an indelible mark on the community.

The economic heartbeat of Upper Dublin Township pulsates from within the expansive Fort Washington Office Park, which sprawls across 536 acres and houses a myriad of businesses, including industry giants like Honeywell and Aetna. Despite its storied past and vibrant present, the office park has faced challenges, including flooding.

Strategically positioned at the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Route 309 convergence, Fort Washington boasts a vital interchange accessible via Pennsylvania Avenue. SEPTA Regional Rail’s Lansdale/Doylestown Line serves the area through the Fort Washington station, while bus routes 94, 95, and 201 offer convenient public transit options. Additionally, intercity bus service, provided by OurBus, connects Fort Washington to New York City, underscoring its significance as a regional transportation hub.
