The Desert Rose & Other Stories Hiding in Qatar Museums

Qatar’s story is that of a treasure hunt under the sun, where Bedouin songs echoed across the desert sands and salty breezes whispered secrets to daring pearl divers. Qatar’s past can be explored through museums that aren’t stuffy, but bursting with adventure!

Uncover tales of fearless fishermen chasing elusive pearls, and witness the country’s transformation from a charming harbor town to a modern marvel.

While skyscrapers were busy poking holes in the sky, one Indiana Jane of archaeology, Beatrice de Cardi, knew there were secrets buried beneath the shiny buildings — the forgotten songs of the Bedouins and whispers of the pearl divers’ past.

So, in the 1970s, Beatrice and her crew grabbed their metaphorical shovels and started digging! And guess what? They unearthed hidden treasures like Al Da’asa, where Ubaid potsherds from the Neolithic period. These became the first sparkling gems in the crown of Qatar’s Museums!

The National Museum of Qatar (NMOQ) opened on March 28, 2019, showcasing exhibits on the natural history of the desert and the Persian Gulf, artifacts from Bedouin culture, historical exhibitions on the tribal wars, the establishment of the Qatari state, and finally the discovery of oil.

The building itself is a giant sand rose, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, this Museum is inspired by the “phenomenon of the desert rose” inspired by the desert’s hidden treasures that form when the wind whispers secrets to the sand, and the sand crystallizes into intricate petals giving the appearance of a delicate rose. Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is a treasure hunter’s paradise. MIA is a building that blends modern lines with cool geometric shapes and traditional Islamic styles, all designed by the famous architect I.M. Pei.

The coolest part? Qur’ans dating all the way back to the 7th century to the Ottoman works of the 19th century!

One is the Abbasid Blue Qur’an, a rare beauty with calligraphy that shimmers gold against a captivating blue background. Where it came from is a mystery — experts debate Iran, Iraq, Tunisia, Spain, or even Sicily! The letters from pure gold leaves gitter when the light hits at the right angles, giving a divine impression. Even the surahs have been intricately written using silver leaf or silver ink rosettes.

MIA even has two pages from the WORLD’S LARGEST Qur’an, the Timurid Baysunghur Qur’an.
