We would like to officially welcome our new Code for JC Community Organizer, VP Taylor.

VP Taylor, 2016 Code for JC Brigade Program’s Community Organizer

VP Taylor was born and raised in Brooklyn New York. He has a bachelors in Christian Education and a C.A.S.A.C-T, NY State substance abuse counseling training certification. Taylor takes great pride in uplifting members of the community by partnering with the Jersey City Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and Hudson County Partnership for Prevention.

Taylor will collaborate with other Code for JC leaders and be responsible for recruiting and welcoming new members to the Brigade and helping them get oriented. They are the point of contact for members who have questions about how to get started, what to do next, or how to help locally.

This role of Community Organizer should know about upcoming member events, be available to attend hack nights to assist with member questions, and create a welcoming environment. This position doesn’t necessarily require technical knowledge.

The Community Organizer’s areas of focus include:

» Ownership of building and maintaining community
» Recruits new members
» Onboards new members
» Empowers new members to use skills in Brigade structure
» Manages Google group
» Helps members move up the ladder of engagement
» Keeps track of membership

Relevant skills

This role is a great fit for someone who has a welcoming personality, adaptability, and great communication skills. Technical proficiency is not a requirement, but having the ability to weigh ideas that use technology is.

Commitment

» Attend monthly Hangout for Community Organizer Core Team Members
» 2–5 hours/month on recruitment and outreach
» Attend meetups and Brigade events to orient new members

What CfA Brigade Provides

» Training in relevant areas such as outreach/recruiting best practices, orientation/curriculum development, and more
» Forum to connect with Community Organizer CTMs in Brigades across the world

Metrics

The Community Organizer will track the following:
» New members
» Active members

Please note that Roberto Martin has resigned from his great volunteer service as Technical Lead due to a change in residence. The long commute became an obstacle.

Code for JC is still looking to improve and expand its organization to further impact Jersey City. We focus our iterative, user-centered, and data-driven approach to government and community primarily in four areas that have real human impact. Safety & Justice, Economic Development, Health, and Communication and Engagement. See blog post: https://medium.com/@CodeForJC/expanding-code-for-jc-brigade-s-leadership-team-c28ec8e9dd0a#.jd13kwi5u
