This article will guide you on offsetting carbon emissions from your air travel using blockchain-powered IPCI carbon footprint calculator. This calculator is created by DAO IPCI and Russian Carbon Fund and is available via the link.

How it works?

IPCI calculator measures carbon emissions from air travel using ICAO methodology and gives an opportunity to offset them with verified carbon units that are traded on DAO IPCI platform. These units are provided by various climate projects — their brief description is available on the website of the calculator. One unit is equal to 1 ton of CO2 equivalent — note that it is only possible to offset the amount of CO2 that is multiple of one unit.

What makes it different from other calculators?

IPCI calculator is the first carbon offset calculator in the world created on public Ethereum blockchain. Usage of blockchain ensures unprecedented transparency and traceability of transactions. Carbon units used for offsetting emissions have been verified in accordance with international standards: VCS, CDM, ISO 14064–2 and Blockchain Climate Standard.

How to use IPCI calculator?

To offset your emissions using blockchain calculator, you need to have: MetaMask to access the blockchain; a crypto wallet and some Ethers (ETH).

  • MetaMask: a bridge between your browser and Ethereum network

MetaMask is a connection between your browser and Ethereum public blockchain network. You can download the add-on for Chrome, Firefox and Opera, or install the Brave browser. Read more about using MetaMask here.

  • Wallet: a way to access your Ether currency

The wallet contains a code that enables access to your cryptocurrency. There are various wallets, but the most convenient one is your MetaMask account.

  • Ethers: currency to pay for carbon offset

Performing transactions on blockchain requires Ethers, which you can purchase on stock exchanges using your credit card. Here are some options:

  • CEX.io (available worldwide)
  • Bittrex (available worldwide)
  • Coinbase (available in 33 countries)
  • Kraken (available globally, with limitations)
  • DEEX (available globally, with possible limitations related to US sanctions)

These are only a few out of many cryptocurrency exchanges. You can find more information here or do your own research.

Note that the process of purchasing ETH for new users might take 3–5 working days or more.

10 steps to offset your emissions

  1. Download MetaMask

2. Create password for your account and accept terms of use

3. Write down the seed words — you will need them for restoring access to your wallet if you forget your password

4. Find your account number (a unique 26–35 digit combination of letters and numbers) — note that you can copy it by clicking an icon

5. Register on one of the exchanges and purchase Ethers — note that this photo is just an illustration, we do not advertise any particular exchange

6. Transfer your ETH to the wallet using account number

7. Build your itinerary on IPCI calculator and click “offset” — note that it is only possible to offset the amount of CO2 that is multiple to 1 ton

8. Choose carbon units that you want to purchase to offset your emissions

9. Run the transaction

10. Receive confirmation for offsetting your emissions!
