The Legacy Cowl’s Story So Far…

Batman fans got the ultimate opportunity, to vote on the direction of a new DC Comics series, and to play along in Gotham City as it came to life.

Starting in 2022, DC Fans became part of a first-of-its-kind fan experience, with digital collectibles unlocking access to the DC storyworld.

What has happened so far, and how can you join fans on the streets of Gotham City as new mysteries come to life in 2024?

The Journey Started here…

1. Things kicked off for the citizens of Gotham City with DC FanDome 2021 when the first in-world objects were released — those storage discs and the codes on their back. These are components of the DC Overdrive which gives civilian detectives in Gotham City the opportunity to access, expand and unlock new content in the storyworld.
2. Batman then created the Bat Cowls as a way to expand his legacy. During this period he created and ultimately shelved the AI-enabled Legacy Cowl in favor of creating the Gotham City District Knightwatch (GCDK).
3. Batman released the Bat Cowls to the Gotham City District Knightwatch (GCDK) inviting them to stand for justice with him, and they hit the streets to solve mysteries throughout the 10 districts they were assigned to patrol.
4. Harley Quinn Crew hit the scene and RSVPed for Mayhem for her epic heist of the Gotham City Hall of Records — teasing the GCDK at every turn, and releasing historical documents into our shared story.
5. After Harley Quinn’s successful caper, Batman committed to train the GCDK and kicked off the rank challenges.
6. The first time we saw The Legacy Cowl reach out into Gotham City’s systems was in the mysterious pulse where your Gotham City Maps were deployed.
7. Harley Quinn — after spending some time relaxing post heist as the heat died down — saw what the GCDK was up to, and of course knew she’d do it better for her crew starting her own rank challenges shortly afterwards.
8. She tested her crew on Criminal, Psychology — how well do you understand Gotham City’s rogue’s gallery, then on the biggest mystery of them all — themselves — in the One N’ Only challenge.
9. The Batcomputer’s systems were compromised during that initial intrusion, but it was unclear how deep that exploit went. It definitely impacted Batman’s choice to test the GCDK on codes.
10. After that Master of Secrets challenge, chronologically, the events of Batman: The Legacy Cowl #1–3 occur. Bat Cowl holders voted on everything from the title to the design of letterboxes in this comic series. We haven’t confirmed when the theft of The Legacy Cowl actually occurred — but it was before this period.
11. After Batman faced off with The Legacy Cowl, Harley Quinn was planning a first Crew-I-Versary party, but happened upon one of the warehouses where The Legacy Cowl was assembling its dupes — revealing a creepy robot code.
12. That led us to the Master of Shadows and Flippin’ Amazin’ challenges where the crews reconnected and virus scanned the batcomputer nodes throughout Gotham City.
13. That brings us to today! The original Legacy Cowl was crunched by superman, but it’s legacy is obviously still at large. The GCDK and Harley Quinn Crew are still live in Gotham City. We’re exploring new experiences, stories and tools to continue fans’ journeys in Gotham City and new ways to bring community voices into the process.
