Women@San Francisco on International Women’s Day

For the entire month of March, we celebrated Women’s History with the theme: This is Feminist Energy. Our mission at Dropbox is to unleash the world’s creative energy by designing a more enlightened way of working. Creative energy is the force inside everyone that drives them to be inventive, imaginative and solve big problems — it’s not about being a “creative person” so much as approaching work with possibility and optimism. With the Women’s employee resource group (Women@) theme in mind, Dropboxers around the globe celebrated women with activities that unleashed their feminist energy, in all of it’s diverse and dynamic forms!

There were over 65 events around the globe for Women’s History Month (WHM), Pi-Day (3/14) celebrations in our US offices with woman owned pie shops and global celebrations and activities on March 8, for International Women’s Day.

Below are just some of the highlights from our global offices.

Sydney

The team in Sydney celebrated the month giving back at Lou’s Place, a women’s shelter, and hosting a clothing drive. They also spent part of International Women’s Day in a Self Defense Master class, providing Dropboxers the skills needed to protect themselves in an attack.

With over 20 events at Dropbox HQ in San Francisco, there was something for everyone this Women’s History Month. The months discussions & activities covered topics like navigating careers, negotiation skills for yourself, but also focused on some relvant topics like, fertility, cryptocurrency and politics, including a workshop with Echo Brown on creating a “Thrive Plan” to not only have the tools to survive, but the tools to thrive.

There were a ton of exciting activities in New York this month! In addition to taking some beautiful portraits to celebrate the awesome women in the New York office, the NYC team volunteered at Win (Women in Need), had over five flavors of pie for Pi-Day and welcomed our exec team.

Austin

Ride — Indoor cycling

Our Austin (ATX) office is a leader when it comes to recognizing and celebrating intersectionality, so to welcome the month of March Women-ATX@ teamed up with Austin’s Black Dropboxers to host a Black History Month/Women’s History Month vendor fair at the end of February featuring small business owned by women of color. Each week in March had a focus area, like Wellness, with activities to support (like cycling)! With one week seeing former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis joining the Austin office for a Droptalk.

Seattle

One of the many highlights from the Seattle office calendar of WHM events included equaliTEA that featured discussions on diversity in Seattle, paired with scones and tea. They also held the first site-wide VTO (volunteer time off) event of the year at Mary’s Place, a local emergency shelter for homeless families and women. Participating Dropboxers did everything from donation sorting and kitchen prep for lunch to hosting a nail painting station for the residents.

London

London Dropboxers with Personal Branding expert Howard Kingston @ General Assembly, London

The London office celebrated International Women’s Day with a Career Brunch Workshop with three awesome female Dropboxers: Gazala Haq, Polly Fields and Geraldine MacCarthy. They shared insights into their career paths and what they have learned over delicious croissants and coffee. Additionally, a group of London Dropboxers attended a thought-provoking and action-focused workshop at General Assembly on building your personal brand.

Dublin

Treats everywhere! In our Dublin office there was a “treats trolley” for Women’s History Month, to raise funds and awareness for Plan International’s, “Because I am a girl” campaign.

For International Women’s Day, they celebrated by launching the Inspire Awards, an opportunity to recognize amazing women at Dropbox, whose hard work, dedication and commitment to gender equality are inspiring. Over 95 thoughtful nominations were received!

Now that Women’s History Month is over, this does not mean we’re going to stop celebrating women! In fact the festivities continued into April with our own version of “Daughters of the Evolution,” where we brought together three senior women in tech to discuss the realities of motherhood a demanding career and its impact on the family; specifically daughters. We look forward to continuing the discussions around women’s issues and celebrating women daily. Here’s what a few of our Women@ Dropboxers had to say on how we can keep the momentum going:

Let’s include men in the conversation on how they can empower women in the workplace, they need to be a part of the celebration and change too!”

-Kaela Tuttle

Give women more opportunities to speak and present so they can be seen and heard. We should be encouraging women to speak up in meetings and ensure the mix of speakers on panels and on stages are evenly split.”

-Kari Yen
