WEIRDO Ranks: Every Live-Action Superman Movie š¦øš»āāļø (Part 2 of 8)
40+ years of truth and justice!
After many years of superhero cinema, numerous properties have received a plethora of adaptations, more so with Superman. With an abundance of sequels, remakes, and reboots nowadays, itās difficult to decide which ones deserve a spot among the upper echelons of the comic book world.
Though every movie provides its own significance toward the Kryptonianās mythos, this series of articles will stamp my official ranking of each Superman film Iāve seen, from 1978's Superman: The Movie to 2021's Zack Snyderās Justice League. I hope you all enjoy and remember to hit that clap button as well as comment where you would rank each flick on your personal list.
Disclaimer: You might not agree with most of my picks, but that is why I love writing these articles ā for amicable debate. Without further ado, letās get to it! Oh, and spoilers aheadā¦just in case.
7. Superman II
Widely regarded as the best Christopher Reeve Superman movie, Superman II injected a dose of all the right ingredients that made the first film as special as it was, with some well-needed action sprinkled into the mix. Including the return of Margot Kidderās Lois Lane, Gene Hackmanās Lex Luthor, and renowned thespian Terrence Stamp as General Zod, the film carried a gravitas with it that elevated superhero movies in that era.
With Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent desiring to lead a normal life with his love, Lois Lane, he renounces his powers at the same time that Kryptonians General Zod, Ursa, and Non are released from their prisons via Supermanās innocently reckless actions. Their arrival on Earth threatens its destruction as Superman must contend with the otherworldly beingsā power which rivals his own. Stir into the pot Lex Luthorās own nefarious agenda with Lois Lane caught in the crossfire and you have a wild 2-hour ride that, no matter how outdated it may seem, manages to thoroughly entertain.
Though Superman ends up inconclusively offing the three Kryptonians, peculiarly throwing a cellophane āSā at Zod, and wiping Lois Laneās mind of Clark Kentās alter ego with a kiss, the film remains globally revered as a generally well-done product of its time. At a time when superhero cinema was not the hottest topic in pop culture, Superman II truly stood its ground, becoming the ultimate Superman movie for a majority of fans of the golden age.
While not my personal favorite as a child of the 90ās, Superman II still bears a lot to like. As the first action-centric of Christopher Reeveās films, the Richard Lester-directed sequel was not only a solid follow-up to the original, but a film that paved the way for superhero flicks to be taken a little more seriously. Personally, I donāt find myself desiring to rewatch this one ā like, ever ā but I can appreciate what it meant for superhero movies and what it means to the fans in general. It just doesnāt really do it for me.
