More Than 1,000,000.
Wildfires are considered natural disasters. But only 10 to 15% of them have a natural origin.
It occurs during dry periods with warm temperatures. When the vegetation is dry, a little spark can trigger a fire. It can be lightning for example.
But the majority is from human acts. Campfires, cigarette butts, or even criminal acts are the cause of the other 85ā95% of wildfires.
Whatās the Fire Triangle:
This is a simple representation to understand how a fire starts and grows.
Fuel: Vegetation.
Heat: Allowing combustion to create fire.
Oxygen: When we blow into our chimney to start our fire, the same principle occurs on a larger scale.
We always need all three parts of a fire, if one of them is missing, the fire goes out.
Waters & Fire Retardant Techniques:
These are the major methods for fighting a fire. Water is of course used on the fire, but also on the front of it. The goal is to try to reduce the heat of the fuel to prevent the spread of the fire.
This is why we use fire retardant products on the surrounding vegetation, this creates a humidity bubble around the vegetation and stops the spread of fire.
Firefighters:
They are deployed to control critical areas to stop the progression of the fire. Fire trucks cannot access all areas, sometimes firefighters must literally walk through the fire.
Canadair:
These planes are used only for firefighting. They can drop 6,000 liters of water at a height of 30 to 50 meters. There are also used to spread fire retardants in critical zones.
Fire Techniques:
Some expert teams can fight fire with fire. We call this technique the Contre-feux (Counterfires).
An area is intentionally burned, creating a second firefront that will counteract the first. The goal is that when the two fronts meet, there is no more fuel and the fires will eventually stop.
We understand the expertise required to start this type of fire so as not to make the situation worse (taking into account the weather conditions).
