Indonesia is the fourth of the largest coffee exporters in the world after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia. The most exported type of coffee beans from Indonesia is coffea robusta or robusta.

Would you like to know the most popular robusta from Indonesia?

Robusta coffee is known for its bitter and strong flavor. The plant grows in the lowland areas unlike Arabica which grows in the highland above sea level.

However, usually the first coffee for everyone is a robusta. What we define as the taste of coffee it turns out is robusta coffee. Arabica tastes like the advanced flavor from usual coffee in general.

So this is my opinion :

you won’t know the best coffee flavor except after recognizing the standard, which is robusta coffee. But, at this time, even robusta has already developed to get more flavorful above standard.

So what is the most popular robusta from Indonesia that has been exported abroad?

Robusta Lampung

Lampung is one of the provinces in Indonesia best known for producing pepper, cacao and of course coffee beans. In 2018 this region produced 110.570 million tons of robusta beans. Robusta Lampung is one of the most exported to Singapore.

Robusta Lampung tastes strong, bitter with a spicy aroma. This coffee bean is fit for Asian coffee culture everywhere which coffee would be served with added sugar, milk or condensed milk and even egg. Then there is toast bread as a side dish for breakfast.

Robusta Bengkulu

Bengkulu is also one of the provinces in Indonesia from Sumatra Island which is lately known for producing Robusta coffee beans. The production of Robusta Bengkulu is 80.000 tons per year. Uniquely it is planted 800–1500 above sea level which is usually for planting Arabica varieties.

Robusta Bengkulu tastes fruity with a hint of lemon and chocolaty with herb sensation. This profile has brought Robusta Bengkulu to win a national specialty coffee contest. To promote this coffee, the local government developed an agro tourism village for coffee planting.

Robusta Pinogu

Unlike the above variety, Pinogu is not a province. It is a village in Gorontalo Province that produces delicious Robusta Pinogu.

Robusta Pinogu has a long lasting history on how they began to produce coffee. The first coffee bean was brought to this Province in 1677. However, it wasn’t developed to be a competitive production until 1970. When coffee drinkers finally realize that it has a strong chocolatey flavor in it.

After the developing era until today, Robusta Pinogu has an 80,75–81,75 rate. The main profile of it is the taste of chocolate and strong body flavor.

Even though Robusta tastes like standard coffee, this 3 variety Robusta has an exceptional flavor. I hope this best Robusta from Indonesia will soon be popular internationally and not only around Asia.
