Where magic happens.
Alternative title: Come out of your comfort zone!
We all like to be comfortable. When we are in our house, we like to throw on some sweatpants, put our hair in a messy bun, and wear absolutely no make-up. We like to stay in our bed or on the couch, with our comfy little cover on our lap while sipping our lovely tea or coffee. When we go out, we like to take the same road, to get to our favorite place, and to be with the people that we know and love.
We, as the true human beings that we all are, like to be comfortable. We like to do things that we are used to do. We like to go places that we are used to go. We like to see people that we are familiar with. We, most of the time, don’t really step out of our comfort zones. Because we already have our comfortable little habits, so why would we disrupt this? And for what?
We don’t know what lies outside of our comfort zones. Might be something dangerous, like dragons breathing fire or giant trolls ready to step on us. Ok, that seems unlikely. But the point is that we don’t know what can or cannot happen outside of our comfort zones. And if you are anything like me and you are quite the perfectionist then you will agree with me on the fact that the unknown is something you fear terribly. Because as a perfectionist you like to know. You like to know what to do, when to do it, how to do it, why you do it etc… You enjoy having everything under control.
But sometimes, you cannot have everything under control.
Like the saying goes:
“Shit happens” — Shakespeare
Therefore, I am slowly learning to let go of this need to control everything, plan everything and know everything. And I am trying to embrace the unknown.
I am trying to step out of my comfort zone. Because even if my comfort zone is nice, warm and comfy, it is and it will always be the same stagnant dull life. And by staying in this comfort zone, I say “no” to other opportunities and possibilities.
By staying in my comfort zone, I might not see all those other roads that lead to where I want to go. If I stay in my comfort zone, I know where I’m going but am I going where I WANT to go? Probably not.
So what I suggest is that we all make one little step outside our comfort zones. It might be to take another road to go to the grocery store. Or it might be to try a new coffee shop instead of the one you’ve been going to for the past 10 years. Or maybe to go talk to strangers in a coffee shop and ask them what they are working on. (Which is an experience that was made by Tristan de Montebello, you can read about it here. It’s quite an interesting experience, that I shall try myself.)
Just take one step.
One step is enough to open new doors and make you see new opportunities that you’ve been turning down without you knowing. I’m not saying that you will open this one door that will hold everything you’ve ever wanted and the life you’ve always dreamed of. I’m saying that there are so many paths to get to where you want to be. And if you stay in your comfort zone, you will only get to open the few doors that you feel more comfortable opening.
In other words, like Thomas Oppong said in Get Out of Your Comfort Zone (Your Success Depends on it):
“If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten”
I know the unknown is scary. And on second thoughts there might actually be a dragon breathing fire outside of your comfort zone. But if you don’t step out to see for yourself, then you might never be a kick-ass dragon slayer. I don’t know what I have with dragons today. *laughter*
But what I am trying to say is that if you don’t step out of your comfort zone then you might never know what you could become. Might be a dragon slayer, might be a president, might be a singer, might be a writer, might be a unicorn even! Who knows? Well, not you. You don’t know because you’re stuck in your comfort zone. So you have no idea what you could become...
So get out of this comfort zone immediately! And if outside of it shit gets too crazy, know that you can still go back to that comfy zone! Just like you can go back to your comfy bed after a long day outside in the world!
