The Angel Oak Tree on John’s Island SC, is one of the oldest and largest living things east of the Mississippi. In 1867, it became part of an estate owned by Judge Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. The Park was acquired from the family in 1943 after they donated it to the city for use as a public park. Today its trunk has a circumference exceeding 100 feet with limbs up to 165 feet high, making it one-of-a-kind among live oak trees east of the Mississippi River.
Angel Oak Tree is a southern live oak that has survived over 800 years and continues to grow. The tree was damaged by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, but as it’s grown stronger each year, the Angel Oak Tree still stands proudly today. This majestic tree towers at 161 feet tall with a canopy of 240 feet wide. It is currently the oldest and largest living thing on North America’s Eastern Coastline.
