Boone Hall Plantation

Boone Hall Plantation is a historic district located in Mount Pleasant, Charleston County, South Carolina. The most important historic structures in the district are the brick slave cabins along Slave Street, which date between 1790 and 1810. The plantation, which used enslaved labor until the American Civil War, is one of America’s living history museums that preserves the country’s social history through interactive exhibits and programs. Surrounding Boone Hall Plantation are acres of farmland where visitors can see how crops were farmed before industrial farming techniques became popular at the turn of this century.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 with a boundary increase in 1994. Boone Hall Plantation is one of America’s few remaining working plantations and home to some of Charleston’s oldest oak trees. The plantation was established shortly after the founding of the Carolina Colony and witnessed the Revolutionary War, birth of the nation, Civil War, 1837 incorporation of Mount Pleasant as a city — all while continuing to operate as an operating cotton plantation until 1942 when it stopped growing commercial crops for profit.

Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens is a historic site where you can step back in time to the 18th century. Boone Hall Plantation was founded in 1681 when Englishman Major John Boone came to Charleston and established a lucrative plantation and gracious home on the banks of Wampacheone Creek. The family and descendants of Major Boone were influential in the history of South Carolina, the colonies, and the nation. In 1743, the son of Major John Boone planted live oak trees, arranging them in two evenly spaced rows that form a beautiful avenue for visitors to stroll under today. The property has been owned by five generations of Boone's, including Daniel Morgan who commanded troops during both the American Revolution at Saratoga.

Boone Hall Plantation is the only plantation museum in South Carolina. The Boone Hall Foundation, Inc., which operates the plantation and gardens, was founded by Mrs. James F. Byrnes to preserve the site for future generations of Americans to learn about life in a pre-industrialized society as well as its role in developing our nation’s history and culture. The Boone Hall Foundation has been operating as a nonprofit educational institution since 1954 and continues to maintain this focus with hands-on exhibits on 18th century crafts such as spinning, weaving, cooking skills, animal husbandry practices and slave life at Boone Hall Plantation during the Antebellum era.
