You want to be better. You want to achieve your dreams. But you’re still doing the things you shouldn’t be doing. The things that aren’t getting you closer to success. This article will help with that. You’ll be able to establish good self-discipline and achieve personal growth.

If you’ve read my article on Self-improvement, you know by now that setting your goals is very important. And you’ve done just that. You made a list of goals, short-term and long-term ones. But you don’t know what to do next. Well, it’s simple — Work.

“Pleasure consumes us. Work strengthens us. Let us choose.”

-Charles Baudelaire

You must work towards your goals. But not only when you’re motivated. In order to succeed, you need to work every single day. Whatever it is. Whether you want to get in shape, train in some sport, learn a skill, etc. Doing the things you don’t feel like doing, but are good for you, will make you succeed. It’s all about repetition. Having the same routine and doing the same things every day will help you eventually reach your goals.

But here, another thing is of great importance. It’s patience. You won’t reach your goals overnight. It takes months, even years, to get to a certain level. But you should never quit. After a fall, get up and go forward. Look at what you did wrong, and try again.

You will think it is out of reach, the things you dream of. You might lose confidence. But stay true to yourself and work. Continue doing those things, and be dedicated. I promise it will come eventually.

“Common man’s patience will bring him more happiness than common man’s power.”

-Amit Kalantri.

But now, we’ll talk about the most crucial factor in reaching your goals. None of this would be possible without self-discipline.

What is Self-Discipline

A lot of people don’t see the difference between motivation and discipline. Motivation is doing it when you feel like it. But discipline is doing it regardless of the way you feel. It means doing good things even if you don’t want to.

Self-discipline will help you do your work consistently. Whether you’re angry or sad, depressed or anxious, you must continue to work. After failing, you will get up and get back to work. If you’re tired, you’ll conquer your mind and still work.

“Difficulties show a person’s character.”

-Epictetus.

If you develop this mindset, you’ll have no limit. Who knows what you could achieve? Only if you would stop procrastinating. Take a moment with yourself, and think about this. Do you want to achieve your goals, or do you want to chase fake pleasures?

“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm? “

-Marcus Aurelius.

You must understand that without discipline, you won’t see any results. After you master self-discipline, you’ll be one step closer to success. But of course, it won’t be easy. So, make a choice, do you want to achieve your goals? If so, start improving right away. Find the bad things in your daily routine, and remove them.

Remember, you’re having a battle against yourself. Not against anybody else. You need to conquer your mind in order to be successful. Stop comparing yourself to others, and pay attention to your progress. Once you do this, you’ll find more motivation and work even more.

“Man conquers the world by conquering himself.”

-Zeno of Citium.

Stoicism teaches us self-discipline as a tool to overcome emotions. I advise you to start learning about Stoicism. It will most definitely help you in your self-improvement journey. You can check out my article on Stoicism.

“A disciplined mind leads to happiness, and an undisciplined mind leads to suffering.”

-Dalai Lama.

Just remember, never give up and never stop working towards your goals. Whatever happens, take a moment to recollect, then work even more. When you fail, use it as strength and motivation to be better. Don’t let it crush you. Use it as hunger.

I hope this article helped you make the right decision. With hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything. When there’s a will, there’s a way.
