At Open Book, “invite people into your story” is our mission—but it’s also a mindset that applies beyond how an organization brands itself. And in this time of quarantine and social separation it’s a mindset that feels all the more important.

“Invite people into your story” is an opportunity every one of us can embrace right now. How can we communicate, connect, and live in ways that break down the walls and distance that otherwise might keep people apart? How can we be honest about what we’re really feeling? How can we be creative in forging connections and pointing people to something bigger than ourselves?

One of the most invigorating and exciting parts of a story is that there is so much possibility.

So we’re feeling inspired by great examples we are seeing of creative and innovative ways to invite people into larger stories — in ways big and small.

We see creativity in the sidewalk chalk notes throughout our city that invite people into a story of joy through simple messages written in bright colors.

We see musicians like Minneapolis artist Lena Elizabeth performing live concerts on Instagram to raise money for a local food shelf and invite others into a story of making a positive impact.

We see local businesses sharing their love for their communities through window signs like this one in Portland, Oregon.

We see a passion for innovation in photographer Jeremy Cowart doing global virtual photoshoots inviting people into his art that is “completely unique, special, and meaningful (in such brutal times).”

We see neighbors in Northeast Minneapolis encouraging one another by sharing a story of hope through these yard signs.

We see creativity in this family in Arizona who decorated their garbage cans to thank their local waste management workers and invite their neighborhood into a story of gratitude.

We see it in celebrities inviting other celebrities into reading children’s books as a part of sharing a bigger story that no child should miss a meal while schools aren’t in session.

How are you creatively and innovatively sharing your story? How are you inviting others into what you are learning in this season? How are you letting your loved ones to know you care about them? How are you communicating how you’re really doing? We’d love to hear. Now is the time for great stories.
