ENS went viral on social media these days. Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum said that “ENS continues to be very valuable and important Ethereum infrastructure.” On October 9, 2021, an unknown wallet purchased the ENS paradigm.eth for 420 ETH, which is the largest ENS transaction to date.

Why spend such a large sum of money to buy a domain name? How to register a .ETH name and operate it? Let us find out.

I. What is ENS?

The Ethereum Name Service, also known as ENS, is a domain service that assigns a user-specific domain tied to your wallet’s account address.

ENS domains take the format of YourDomainHere.eth, simplifying the normal address into a form that is easier to use and send to others. By replacing Ethernet addresses with simple characters, users no longer have to copy and paste long addresses, but can directly use ENS domain names, making it easier to send and receive crypto assets and reducing the risk of transferring funds to the wrong given that hugh losses due to incorrectly entered addresses are reported every year.

In addition, ENS is built on ERC721 protocol, that is, each ENS domain name is actually an NFT. After the registration is completed, you can choose a price to list in the NFT trading market such as OpenSea, and transfer it by auction.

II. How to register an ENS domain name?

Step 1: Connect to MetaMask

Go to https://app.ens.domains/, click into “Connect” at the upper left corner, we assume you are using MetaMask, but other Ethereum-enabled wallet should work very similarly.

Connect to your wallet

You must have at least a small amount of ETH in your wallet to pay transaction costs, first year’s annual fee, and setting fees.

Step 2: Search for your desired .ETH name

Type in to the “Search names” field the .ETH name you’d like to migrate (including the “.ETH” ending), and click the “Search” button.

There is no limit to the length of name and special characters are allowed. But the name will not be available if it is already registered by someone else.

If you see a page like this, “unavailable” means this name is already registered by someone else, then you have to consider another name.

The name is unavailable

If the name is available, you will see a page like this:

The name is available

Here ask you for how long you’d like to register the name, use “-” and “+” buttons to select the time interval.

Set the registration period

Note:

  • ENS is currently open for registrations of domain names of 3 characters and above, and registrants are required to rent the domain name on an annual basis (minimum 1 year, no cap).

For a 3-character domain name, which is the most scarce, the rental fee is $640/year

3-character domain name

For a 4-character domain name, $160/year

4-character domain name

For 5 or more characters, $5/year

5 or more characters

Step 3: Start the registration process

  • Request to register

Click the blue “Request To Register” button on the bottom right. A box should pop up from MetaMask asking you to confirm the transaction. Click the “Confirm” button to confirm it.

  • Wait for a minute

You have to wait to make sure no one else is trying to register the same name.

  • Complete registration

Once your waiting time is over, orange text will appear that says “Click register to move to the 3rd step.” Click the blue next to it that says “Register.”

Another MetaMask box will pop up asking you to confirm another transaction of gas fee and annual fee. Click the “Confirm” button. Then you will see “TX PENDING”, meaning that the transaction is confirmed and your name is registered!

Step 4: Bind your ENS

Click “Set As Primary ENS Name” > “Select one of your ENS names”, you can bind your ENS name to your address, MetaMask will pop up to confirm the setting fee.

By doing so,

  • Anyone can query your ENS domain name through the block browser and multiple DApps. For example, in Etherscan, search for an ENS name and you will see address, expiration date, registrant and controller.
  • Transactions in MetaMask only need ENS name instead of the long list of addresses.

I will introduce how to bind ENS names to Twitter, Discord and Telegram in my next tutorial! Please keep in close touch if interested.
