Do you still think sustainable tourism stands for giving up comfort? Not quite like this …

Let’s be honest: The vast majority of people when hearing the term Sustainable Tourism, should imagine something like this…

It is common to associate this type of travel with nature, bucolic images and so like, but it’s not like that. There is a difference between Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism. Sustainable Tourism is very comprehensive, and can range from small inns to luxury hotels. Intelligent replacements like solar energy plates, selective collection and transfer service with hybrid cars, biodegradable cleaning system are examples of sustainable practices.

If you’re still not convinced, check out these incredible sustainable hotels:

1- Canto das Águas — Their construction did not harm the environment, and they offer selective collection bins throughout the property.

2- Porch Ranch Inn — Tourists are welcomed with hybrid cars and the cleaning system is Biodegradable. Oh, and the toiletries provided by the hotel are organic.

3- Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas — The hotel has economical light bulbs, environmental friendly cleaning products, and its kitchen has organic products.

4- H2hotel — The grass roof prevents the flow of rainwater from causing damage to the neighboring stream, the Foss Creek. And it also helps purify the air and preserve the surrounding environment.

5- Municipal Market of Curitiba — Did you know that Curitiba has the first session of organic in Latin America in a Municipal Market? It is possible to buy from cosmetics to taste organic coffees and teas produced in the region. And all for a fair price! You still help to circulate and boost the local economy.

For the professionals of the area to invest in these practices, the initial cost may be high, but the decrease of costs appear in the long term. Nature and the environment thanks you.

But that’s not all. These practices can become a business plan and a competitive differential. If you own some tourism or leisure business, it does not take much to adopt sustainable small-scale practices. How about extending accessibility in your establishment? Having a menu available in Braille, for example, can make all the difference.

Still not convinced? Do you think it is impossible to stay in hotels similar to the ones above? We help you. Check out tips on how you can contribute to smart and sustainable tourism.

  • Conscious consumption: Why not buy from local producers?
  • Whenever possible, use the public transport of the destination visited.
  • Escape from the obvious: Look for new flavors, go to the bars and restaurants of local people.
