His skills were unparalleled. This guy oozed creative genius and no matter where he worked he was the envy of his peers. Well, mainly his junior peers. Though everyone around him admired his creative mastery, those who managed him struggled to be inspired by him. He wasn’t a terrible person by any stretch of the imagination, but he carried a habit that hindered him from holding down a great job that would really let his genius shine. Though he continually excelled at his craft with ingenuity and care, he disregarded all the periphery aspects of the work. …

I remember once thinking to myself, “Will the business of branding ever die out?” With the automation and accessibility of decent design tools emerging for the layman to build with, will this industry that’s created so much value over the years shrivel up into obscurity? More than that, with the uprise of ecommerce sites like Amazon and Ali Baba, where a massive portion of the population just aims to buy the second cheapest widget they can find, does brand really hold as much sway as it once did? …

Reflections on Effective Leadership & Teamwork

You’re in charge of steering a massive ship. There are other people involved, helping you make sure you get to the destination — a lush and beautiful land. But your focus is completely on the ship itself — the stain of the wood, the lettering of the name on the side, the artwork on the masts — rather than paying attention to the journey or destination. In no time, you find yourself completely off-course and end up shipwrecked. Fix your gaze on selfish, impertinent details and you will never see your promised land.

Eight months. It took eight gruelling months…

I’m not that old (yet) and I’ve only been a “professional” design practitioner since 2010. But over this past year I’ve been treated as one who’s acquired some kind of knowledge and can speak to certain issues with regards to this industry. I suppose I can attribute this to the different kinds of jobs I’ve had and the wise people I’ve worked with. I mention this because I recently had a conversation with a young man who is applying to graphic design degree programs and was soliciting some advice. The topic drifted far beyond just which school to apply to…

It’s 6 a.m. and he’s awoken to the sound of a crying child in the distance. He turns over in bed to find his would-be-up-early-but-now-pregnant-and-exhausted wife fast asleep. He’s on. No more sleep-ins for this guy, but it’s come to be a welcomed and utterly necessary responsibility, for many reasons. He goes over to the next room and grabs his toddler out of his crib and the begin to spend the morning together. Before long, the child is sitting on the floor, gently smacking the laminate beside him insisting that his father “sit!” Before he reaches the ground, the boy…

She rushes to her car after having scolded her hand pretty badly when some of her supervisor’s medium-roast spilled on her way out of Starbucks. Of course, this could’ve been avoided had she not been fumbling with two trays of coffee with scones and croissants stuffed in between. The spillage continues on the front passenger seat of her Golf but she’s too caught up thinking about the day ahead of her to realize. She pulls in, races to the door of the office, takes a deep breath and affixes an approachable yet confident smile on her face; her countenance seemingly…

Picture the scene: You’re out of town for a conference and find the free coffee they’re providing is, well, nauseating, so between keynotes you rush out to the closest Starbucks because, even though you’re not a huge fan of Starbucks’ coffee, it’s just palatable enough to pass as a half-decent caffeine kick. You storm into the place with that “busy-business-person” walk and order their sad excuse for a “flat white” and although you may not necessarily think the coffee will be great, you definitely expect the service to be good, at least. I mean, hey — it’s Starbucks! And then…
