Many photographers are starting to upload their images to Instagram using 3x3 grids. It is an amazing way to showcase images while engaging with the medium. This technique also allows for very creative ways to engage with an audience.

The way I create my grids for Instagram is nothing new, but is really streamlined for my daily schedule. I find this whole process takes about 15 minutes in the morning while I am getting my first sips of coffee and checking email.

First, crop (C) the image into a 3x3, 6x6 or 9x9 inch square.

Note: It is better to scale down then to scale up.

Turn on Rulers in the Photoshop workspace. (View > Rulers)

This will display a ruler at the top and left hand side of the workspace in Photoshop. These are invisible guidelines to help edit photographs .Click inside the ruler, drag out the blue line and place it on the image 1/3 and 2/3 of the way from left to right and top to bottom.

Use the Move (V) tool to reposition the guidelines.
Having trouble placing the guidelines? Try zooming in (Command + +).

While holding the line Photoshop will display the exact measurements.

Be sure to be accurate with the guidelines or the overall image will come out a bit off center.

Now create a new document (Command + N) and make the document’s dimensions the same as a single square (make sure to match the PPI as well).

For example if I my image is 9x9 inches at 300 PPI, I want to create new document with the measurements 3x3 inches at 300 PPI.

On the original image, use the Marquee (M) tool to select the different squares starting at the lower right square and move right to left, bottom to top.

Squares are numbered in the order they should be copied to the new document.

Select the first square, Copy (Command + C), then go to the new document and Paste it (Command + V). This will create ‘Layer 1’ in the layer list. Do this for all 9 squares. The new document should end up with 9 layers.

Now Export the file. Go to File > Export > Layers to Files.

Select the destination, file name, and file type, JPEG; then hit run. The files will be exported to the desired destination in a JPEG format.
