Preface: I will walk you through the whole process of applying to be a Developer Student Club Student-Lead in this article. Sit back and enjoy!

Hi everyone, I am Alex, the founder of DSC@HKUST. If you don’t know what Developer Student Club (DSC) is, I have prepared another article for your reference. Without further ado, let’s get started. \ (•◡•) /

Step 1: Visit Google Developer Website and fill in the application form.

DSC Student-Lead application link: https://developers.google.com/community/dsc/leads

There are various questions in the form, such as your basic information, your tech-background as well as asking you to upload a 1-min self-intro video. Fill in the form as much as possible and try to give direct answers to all questions. (ง’̀-’́)ง

Tips 1: Show your passion for hosting and running a community instead of over-emphasising on your technical skillset. This program is looking for people who can lead a community, not just programmers. ≧◡≦

Tips 2: Do not use email domains other than Gmail since you will need a Gmail address to communicate with the Program-Lead or Regional-Leads after you get in. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Step 2: Apply for an interview time slot

About one month after your application, you will receive an email with interview details. You need to follow the guidelines in the email and select a date which suits you most. 〆(・∀・@)

Step 3: Interview

During the interview, you will face various questions ranging from your type of skills, your experience with event-planning, your network in school etc. There are NO programming skill tests.

Question examples that I found online(Reference 1):

• Why do you want to become the Student-Lead for the DSC

• Your experience in Mobile Application and Web Development

• What are your interests and passions, and how it connects with being a Student-Lead

• What are the types of skills (technical, business, soft skills) that students have on campus, and what are some skills that are missing

• Your experience with event-planning — from designing an event to promotion, to conducting the event itself. Also, please detail, if any, PR work that you did around the events you organised.

• Your networks in the college; your relationship with other students & faculty members.

• Your understanding about the local ecosystem and any help you can get or any needs of the Ecosystem.

• Challenges in pursuing initiatives in your college, if any. And how you can overcome them.

Please remember that questions to every applicant can be different.

Tips 3: Keep calm and try your best (ง ͠° ͟ل͜ ͡°)ง, the interviewers are super nice (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

Step 4: Result Announcement

The result shall be announced in early August. Wish you all the best luck! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
