Civil Services Exam — Dos and Don’ts:

Don’t avoid reading the original text books. Please read below the excerpts from my widely acclaimed novel ‘As Boys Become Men’ about which The Times of India says -

Even works about the bureaucracy, like civil servant Upamanyu Chatterjee’s acclaimed “English, August: An Indian Story” (1988) deals with the protagonist’s in -service training, not preparations. But finally one bureaucrat has finally taken the plunge, says The Times Of India.

‘These guides are just cut-paste stuff,’ Rajiv Verma is still sermonizing. ‘Just don’t be tempted to skip the original books, right from NCERTs to the biblical Bipan Chandra, Mahajan, A.L. Basham and Romila Thapar. That is the real slog.’ He was talking about the history portion of the preparation, knowing fully well the history gang gathered in front of him.

‘But Sir, what is the harm if we find everything in one place? Isn’t that a lot of labour saved? I’ve seen a Reddy’s guide book that appears to cover everything. I have learnt that the practice lessons cover the contents of all the major books you were just mentioning,’ a boy asks. He seems like someone who has been recently baptized into the preparations, more intent on eliciting a response than refuting Rajiv Sir.

‘But then it misses out the critical topics. Don’t make this sort of mistake. While you are going through your preparation for prelims, don’t forget to keep an eye on mains as well. That is where these ready-made guides don’t help,’ Rajiv Verma says authoritatively, still preening on his ‘cleared mains’ status.”
