The outcome of 8 products in 8 weeks
Basically: the more forward momentum you build, the quicker and further away you are from your starting point. Mindsets, interests, motivation and circumstances change.
At the beginning of the holidays, roughly 8 weeks ago, I set a challenge to complete 8 products in 8 weeks. I also set a bunch of other goals that I didn’t actually hit, largely because my focus and mindset changed.
In the beginning, 8 in 8 was for fun, not profit. The aim was to prove that I could build products quickly and they were usable. I built 3 products that I’m legitimately proud of (Weightley, Jenkenson, and Creatives Radio), one project I “launched” (not on PH) without finishing properly, and I built 2 others in a hurry (the Machine Learning and FinTech dictionaries).
If you’ve done the math, you’ll realise that’s only 6 products. If I wanted to cheat I could could Collab on Code, which had a second life, but I built that months ago and it became another project that was never fully completed.
The biggest outcome from doing 8 in 8, and coincidentally what changed my focus, was becoming a web developer at a Brisbane based startup named iRecruit. Suddenly, being surrounded by such a talented, driven, and intelligent team my perspective on what I was doing changed. It seemed so small minded when I was around people working to actually make a change.
Now that I’ve met more entrepreneurial people in my home city, my focus has changed from developing small products, web apps, and just “things”. Investing time into improving communication skills, diving deeper into subjects that interest me (especially machine learning, security and IoT) and fostering new interests like hardware, is the route I plan to take now.
8 in 8 was a fantastic kickstart, and I’m so happy I poured as much time and passion into it as I did. It taught a few things a long the way, but the biggest lesson all is that the more forward momentum you build, the quicker and further away you are from your starting point. Mindsets, interests, motivation and circumstances change.
Cheers for reading, give it some ❤
