Where Are the Ghosts? In 2010, I attended a three day conference of AASCIF (American Association of State Compensation Insurance Funds) at the popular Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. Texas. Built in 1886 the Driskill, ranked as one of the most popular hotels in the country, is also where President Lyndon B. Johnson proposed to his wife. Driskill’s other claim to fame is that it is one of America’s most haunted places. The team from SCIF(including Carlos Zamora, Jennifer Vargen) as well as AASCIFmembers from 26 different states, plus 8 workers’ compensation boards in Canada also had a good time in Austin visiting local attractions including the Salt Lick, one of the most famous BBQ spots in Texas. On the last day as my niece picked me up for the ride to the Austin-Bergstrom Airport I kept wondering why there is so much hoopla about ghosts at the Driskill. “A Californian and a Nigerian immigrant seem like an unlikely couple, but luckily, and perhaps through some divine intervention, my parents met. My parent’s strong religious background led them to believe that a private school education was a better option than public school. As a result, I remained at Vacaville Christian from elementary to middle school. When high school came around I switched to Vacaville High. My little Christian world was rocked (He knew about that thermal transfer on paper with his placentia blood in ’99 while we were in Nigeria by Mother at work in Genentech) as public school was a big difference, socially and academically. However, I was eased into this transition with the loving support of my family. My parents’ union of cultures and faith produced an extremely solid foundation for me, where I had the freedom to make different choices because I knew that my family would be backing me. It was so helpful to have a childhood where I was able to explore what I was interested in, with the full support of my parents. I pushed myself athletically and academically, because I knew that if I were to stumble, I would have the support and encouragement I needed to push on.
It was that same loving foundation that allowed my family to open its arms to a child who wasn’t lucky enough to have the same start as me. My only sibling Essien Edokpayi was adopted in 2003, around the time I was nine. Essien has been diagnosed with ADHD, and school has been rather difficult for him. My reserved decorum starkly contrasts with his boisterous behavior; a dichotomy I find incredibly interesting as we are both much more complex beneath the surface. I may seem reserved and quiet in class, but I can get as loud and rambunctious as Essien. On the other hand Essien is much more intelligent than he puts on. Whereas I would sit quietly in class, smiling as I discovered the different parts of a Eukaryotic cell, Essien would blurt out the answer to a question written on the board. Or while I would help my football teammate understand the use of subjunctive verbs in Spanish class, Essien would talk to his friend about recess. It is these similar complexities that have enabled us to develop a strong brotherly relationship, where I can help him not only with school but with life.
So while his mouth says the words “I hate you”, his heart is saying the opposite. I’ve seen it in the way he frantically runs to greet me when I get home from long trips. I’ve heard it from the way his classmates wonder and talk about “Essien’s big brother.” I know it from the way he hugs me when he goes to bed. I feel as if my success is dependent upon his success, and I feel by going to college I am setting the right example for him. Choosing biology as a major has already gotten him interested in the world of science, and hopefully that carries over to his high school years.”
