Have you had an idea? A deep seated conviction that things could be better? That you could bring about that change for the better?

But, on the other hand, has your idea been with you for years with nothing to show for it? Have you seen others bring about their ideas? Maybe you have even tried a few times to do the same but haven’t or couldn’t? Then I’m writing this for you.

This is the story of an idea (Gradely). It is not a success story in which I tell you how you should do things just the way…

When you finally start doing something, for the eighth time!

It was 2012 and as a grad student and working in IT for my university I got to experience the various aspects of Educational Technology: as a Student, as an IT Admin, and as a Professor while providing support for our faculty, and I was dismayed.

Fast-forward 3 years, I was teaching at a High School in my beautiful island of Puerto Rico. The experience was exhilarating and rewarding, except for the complexity and cumbersomeness of the software used at the School. SIS and LMS where not really helping me…

“ I just can’t learn JS :-( ” by Louis Blythe on Unsplash

A friend on mine, who is learning JS, showed me proudly a clock on an html page. He told me that after 7 hours he finally got it to update every minute! I smiled at him and said: “I think you are ready to learn a JS framework.”

I started my journey in the Frameworks fairyland with Vue and this amazing series by Laracast. I had heard about React, but back then when I looked at JSX it seemed like an abomination to me! Mixing html tags with JS logic? Haven’t they heard about design patterns and separation of concerns? Why not just use JQuery to make some blinking text for goodness’ sake?

But then I learned JS, not JQuery JS* (making tricks with the DOM), but JS as a development language, an elegant expressive tool to manipulate data, a language with beautiful methods to work with Arrays…

Why not JUST Node.js

Just gonna say this, I LOVE Js! The quirks (1 == "1" // true), the new frameworks every week, npm install meaning-of-life, and how X is faster than React.js by Y order of magnitude 😆! Anyways, when I heard about Node.js back in the days of v0.9 it seemed like a dream to have JS Full-Stack! From there my love affair with Express.js started. …
