Welcome to Monrovia, the thriving and energetic capital city of Liberia. Come along on a voyage as we explore the mouthwatering food, amazing sights, and rich culture that make Monrovia a destination like no other.

About Airline

When I arrived in Liberia and realized that my cell phone had been lost during my trip, I went straight to theBrussels Airlines Monrovia Office in Liberia to file a complaint. The employees at the office helped me through the complaint process and gave me comfort in a worrying circumstance. They were kind and understanding. With their help, I had peace of mind knowing that my complaint was being handled effectively and that action was being made to rectify the matter. They helped make a tough situation more manageable with their expertise and care, and I felt appreciative for their help as I left the office.

Iconic Landmarks and Attractions

The Ducor Hotel

In Monrovia, Liberia, there lies an abandoned opulent hotel called the Ducor. When it opened in 1960, there were eight storeys and 106 rooms. After being occupied by squatters who were driven out prior to an abortive attempt at renovations financed by Libya, the hotel fell into disarray. Perched atop Ducor Hill, the city’s highest point, the skyscraper commands views of the Saint Paul River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the West Point neighborhood of Monrovia. It is situated in the heart of Monrovia’s business center, across from United Nations Boulevard at the end of Broad Street.

The historic Providence Island

The Island was among the first locations where emancipated slaves landed on January 1, 1822, making the site significant both historically and culturally to West African history. These were the second group of African slaves that left America in 1820 to return to their fatherland, where they founded the modern-day country of Liberia. Being an island, it demonstrates how the “no point of return” theory — which held that slaves were transported to the Americas against their will — was reversed. Originally called Dozoa, which translates to “Land in the Center of Water” in the Gola dialect, Providence Island defines Liberia’s national origins and the visible diversity of its cultures. Prior to the first group of emancipated slaves from America, Providence Island was a major trade post for both Portuguese and ethnics of the land.

Waterside Market

Chaotic Waterside Market offers almost everything for sale, including colourful textiles, shoes, leather goods and pottery, all with a dose of foul smells and lots of noise. Haggle hard, smile, and embrace raw Monrovia to its fullest.

The richest neighborhood in Liberia

The richest people in Liberia both citizens and foreign nationals also reside in the city in some highbrow neighborhoods around the Mamba point and Sinkor Beach sides and some other areas in the city

The City of Monrovia aims to support and promote public art in the Community through the new Art in Public Places Online Map. Monrovia’s public art is a vital element of the City’s character and plays a central role in making it a vibrant and culturally rich community.

A Taste of Monrovia

Palm Butter

Palm Butter was one of the staple dishes in Grand Gedeh County and the southeast of Liberia. It was kind of a thick stew made with meat and palm kernels that, of course, was served over a small mountain of rice. Since the dish wasn’t served throughout Liberia, on this trip, I wanted to photograph, document, video record, and thoroughly enjoy my palm butter experience.

Jollof rice

jollof rice, is a rice dish from West Africa. The dish is typically made with long-grain rice, tomatoes, chilies, onions, spices, and sometimes other vegetables and/or meat in a single pot, although its ingredients and preparation methods vary across different regions.

Cassava leaf soup

Cassava leaf soup also known as saka saka or pondu is a simple, yet tasty and substantial soup that is widely consumed in many parts of Central Africa especially in countries like Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
