The door at 10 Downing Street might be known all over the world. It might look like any other door. But, it’s not. As doors go, it’s frankly a bit useless.

Nobody can open this door from the outside; it has no keyhole. Some security/police person watches a monitor 24/7 and opens the door from the inside when someone needs to come in.

They probably spend much of their days opening the door for Larry the cat while he decides whether to come in or not.

The ultra-shiny letterbox is just for show. It doesn’t open. It did once. But after an IRA bomb attack, the door’s security was upgraded.

The original 18th century letterbox and its door sit in a museum now. They are apparently so historically special they can only be cleaned by an official No.10 cleaner. Still, less work for the museum’s cleaning crew.
