How to Homeschool

Interviews with Homeschool Parents I Like

I’m a second-generation homeschool mom of 5 young kids, and in one of the wildest twists of 2020, I’m suddenly getting messages every day with some variation of “Hey! Never thought I’d think about homeschooling, but I am. Can you help me? Where do I start? Please help!”

I love having these conversations because I believe bringing education in-house has the potential to be life-changing for so many families. I can give you my favorite resources and books to read and some encouragement, but the truth is each homeschool is as varied an unique as the people under that roof. Your homeschool will be different from ours, and that is a beautiful thing.

Traditional school is working for some people, and that is awesome. If it’s working for you, carry on my friend, and be blessed. But if not, this series is for you.

There are so many reasons people are considering homeschooling — wanting more time together, wanting a unique education designed around their unique children, wanting more nature, travel (remember that?), experiences, wanting the freedom to blend spirituality and education, wanting a less frantic pace of life, wanting MORE — PERIOD.

Or — kids are being bullied (or kids are being bullies), they have learning disabilities, or learning abilities, or spend so much time learning to standardized tests, or have mandatory sex-ed in kindergarten and now — MASKS! NO RECESS! SOCIAL DISTANCING!

Ah — What in the 2020.

It’s ok to want more for your kids than what’s being offered. It’s not one-size-fits-all and it’s not easy. We live in a broken world and there’s no perfect model for education (come to my house on a school day and you will see all the imperfections up close). BUT — there are options, and you can totally do this.

So — I’m doing a little project interviewing some of my favorite homeschooling families. They’ve all brought education home for different reasons. They’re all from different backgrounds. Most of them NEVER thought they’d be homeschooling. But they are, and they’re willing to let us into all the imperfection and beauty. I hope you’ll be as encouraged as I’ve been.

First interview — my mom! Homeschooling mama of 10 with 29 years of experience. She’s put in her 10k hours a few times over. Enjoy — and be encouraged. You can do this.
