But being simple is good

Being simple is being happy;

Her urgency bleeds through the receiver,

As if I’m still her little cub

I hang up and continue my walk down Broadway

The rapture of the setting crimson continues to consume the earth

Schools of simple, young minds weave down the pavement to their Saturday festivities

Some check out the new Blade & Timber

Some the new Avengers

Others file neatly into their favorite soma milkshake bars,

Donning their west coast white puff uniforms

If being simple means preoccupying myself with trivialities,

Then I don’t want to anesthetize myself;

I want to feel the pain of life

I want to take a violent bite out of a lemon

I want to lick the grapefruit film

I want my movie to end in tragedy -

Because tragedy is real

Tragedy is imperfection

The grapefruit is imperfection

I want my loved ones to bawl their eyes out when I’m gone

And screw their faces in acrid impermanence

That will be my last bittersweet gift to them
