Waipo is my Sun

The Sower (1888)

She was good to me

Good in an unadulterated way

Whereas mom and dad disciplined, she was sterling sun

Warm

Yellow

A shepherding light

A foundation

A wellspring of good that sowed my virtues

A model of compassion

Why was she so good?

Maybe it was tragedy

Maybe it was raising five children in a turbulent time

Maybe it was losing her love to cancer

Maybe she had a waipo

My waipo turns eighty this year

She’s back in her homeland

I want her to know how much I love her

How much she’s shaped me

I want to visit her

I dedicate this poem and this life to her

I want to live in a way that will make you proud

I want to be a vessel for your Goodness

Spreading your light to my kids and to the world
