Breaking down the various disciplines within the design industry.

The modern design landscape has evolved and exploded in the last few years with so many interchangeably-used design titles. Design has been growing so much that even established designers have a hard time figuring out the differences. All the variations in design terminology has definitely made for a more complicated task of figuring it all out.

In one of my earlier stories, What’s the deal with designs?, I gave a quick overview on navigating through the various design disciplines and understanding their respective responsibilities in the grand scheme of things.

To narrow down the few core design disciplines, I’ll use today’s story to break down what main qualities pertain to certain design roles so you can have an easier time figuring it all out.

ONE | UX Designer

A UX designer is someone who has a keen eye for “the bigger picture”. They are involved in the entirety of the design thinking process including ideation, user research, wireframing, prototyping, UI, and user testing. The role of a UX designer also includes frequent collaboration with specialized designers (ie. visual, graphics, UI, and etc.), researchers, product managers, developers, internal stakeholders, and users.
