Through the group stage of the world cup, there have been some surprises and a lot of excitement. Here are the players who have covered the most distance after 3 matches.

Not surprisingly, the top 10 is dominated by midfielders. Denmark and Serbia are both elevated by a pair of active mid-fielders. Germany, despite their disappointing exit, did control a huge share of possession in each of their games and had standout activity levels from both Kimmich and Kroos.

Christian Eriksen is not surprising to see atop this list. He is perennially near the top of the distance covered in the Premier League for Tottenham.

Joshua Kimmich is the first listed defender to appear on our list. The German wing-back led his team in distance covered in each of their 3 games.

While not known for being the most pacey player, Toni Kroos has an undeniable impact on the game both for Real Madrid and the German national team. Despite covering over 10.5km (~6.5 miles) in Germany’s match against Sweden, Kroos’ excellent fitness allowed him to still have the energy to score his match-sealing free kick goal.

Surprisingly, N’Golo Kanté didn’t appear in the top 10. His 10.4km (~6.5 miles) average distance landed him in 23rd position.

Lionel Messi isn’t known for the distance he covers on the pitch. He tends to have relatively low distance statistics and rely more on his intellect and supreme skill. In Argentina’s pivotal third match, with their tournament on the line, Messi covered a whole kilometer more distance than in Argentina’s first two matches. Maybe, to be successful in this World Cup, Argentina will need Messi to expend more energy than he is accustomed to.
