Make sure there is a need for what you want to feature in your business

We define this as knowing your target market but you do first have to do the research to make sure that in fact there is a need (target market)

Most people who are just starting out make the mistake of looking for a product first, and a market second and that’s where it can go horribly wrong. For instance you may love and be passionate about crochet or knitting but is there an audience of people who want your information, products or services?

The trick is to use the internet to find a group of people who are searching for the solution to a problem. The internet makes this kind of market research really easy and you will see if there is a demand for what it is you want deliver to them

If you were to take for example searching Google for the term “make money online” you would get a result in 0.69 seconds of about 619,000,000 results. Try it yourself and see as it will vary.

Now if we were to search the term “make money online in retirement” that’s a very different search. That delivers a result of 260,000,000 results (0.63 seconds)

That tells us that if you have a product or service that will serve people in retirement and help them make money online you have a good target market.

Does that make sense?

Market research at this stage is really important so our tips are

• Visit online forums to see what questions people ask and what problems they’re trying to solve
• Do keyword research to find the kinds of keywords that a lot of people are searching
• Check out blogs, articles, presentations of competitors by visiting their websites and taking note of what they’re doing so that you can model them
