Over the past week, I’ve searched out and played every single game in the ChatGPT plugin store. In total, I played 23 game plugins and narrowed down the list to the top 5 ChatGPT plugin games. For each game I choose, I’ll give a ranking and a brief explanation of what the game does and my experience playing it. This is my initial opinion after playing each of these games as someone who has made a few plugins myself and played my fair share of video games. I’d suggest you support these creators and be the final judge as my game preference might be different than yours. Let’s dive in!

Ecosystem, game interactions, and categories

ChatGPT plugins, and by extension, its gaming ecosystem, is still in its infancy. Plugins as a whole were only released in March of this year (2023), but have already started to have an impact on gaming and its future. While searching for and playing all 23 games, I also learned a ton about ChatGPT in general (will save those lessons for anther article)

As you would expect, the plugin market has all kinds of games. Most of the games fall into one of four categories; puzzles, board games, trivia, and RPG/Storytelling games.

The ways in which users interact with the game through the model aren’t always the same. For example, board games like checkers will produce an image. Conversely, the text-based RPGs exclusively use ChatGPT responses to allow the user to influence the story.

Playtime limitations

One key factor in reviewing these games is the rate at which you use your limited responses. All ChatGPT users have a limited amount of responses every 3 hours. Several of the games I tried would force me to waste a response by saying things like “Next Turn”.

I’m also keenly aware of the positive impacts that ChatGPT can have on gaming. I encountered a wide variety of games while preparing for this article and they all excited me for the future in different ways. I’ll talk more about the impacts of AI on gaming in a future article, for now we will stay focused on ChatGPT plugins. I’m also developing my own game for the plugin store, I’ll share more on that soon. :)

While this process wasn’t quick, it was definitely fun to try all 23 games. I tried my best to play each game roughly the same amount of time. However, as you’ll see later, some of the games are much more engaging than others.

Each plugin I tried was unique in both good and bad ways. My expectations for these games weren’t very high when I first started playing around with them. I assumed that only a few of the plugins would have the professional polish of AAA games or the love and detail of an Indie game. I was wrong on both accounts.

The top 5 ChatGPT game plugins

Now that we have talked about the categories, how I tested them all, and the way in which plugins are made, it is time for the final reveal of my top 5 ChatGPT plugins. I really am excited to see more games come in the future with different approaches and not as limited to just word games.

1: Algorithma 🧬🎮

This “immersive life simulator” was the most enjoyable game that I played. The player is given a short prompt summarizing events in their character’s life and then allowed to choose one of four options. It was a pretty basic and boring story at first, the prompt had me living a regular person’s life. This changed when I overwrote the basic story by explaining that the end of the world had just occurred. Impressively, the plugin didn’t miss a beat and took the story in a completely different direction. It’s worth mentioning that to get the most out of this game, you need to prompt engineer the responses a bit. By the end of my journey, I was receiving multiple prompts per turn that allowed me to “control” my starting character, his son, and his granddaughter.

2: Game Box 🕹️📦

As the name would suggest, this plugin is a box of games. Unlike many other plugins, it contains 11 independent games. While a few of the games were disappointing, it is still worth checking out. Many of the games this plugin provides can only be found here. In particular, battleship was very fun to play again. If you’re looking for a single plugin that allows you to experiment with multiple games, this is the plugin for you.

3: Timeport ⏳🌍

This was a great way to explore the world throughout history. This game allows the user to travel to any time and place in history and interact with the people and world. Quests, items, and dialogue that fits the period are presented and allows every destination to play in a completely unique way. While this game is a text-based game similar to Algorithma, the gameplay feels wholly unique and often provides character dialogue to help immerse the player in the world. I have to admit that I love history and couldn’t help but put this game on my list.

4: Open Trivia 🤔💡

This trivia game was very similar to several others that I could have put on this list. However, Open Trivia had a couple features that weren’t present in the others. Customizing things like difficulty and the type of questions allows users of all knowledge and skill bases to have fun. Obviously, the replayability factor of this game is one of the reasons that it’s on this list. You could play this game for hours and still have fun.

5: AI Quest 🌐🛡️

This text-based game has many of the same features as Algorithma, but takes the user’s story in another direction. This is a RPG that has 10 unique story choices and themes that the player can explore. AI Quest enables players to influence the actions of their character to drive the story in whichever direction you are feeling at the moment. Based off the 10 starter stories, you can expect to have a good amount of replayability.

Looking back

Throughout this extensive journey, I was able to not only try every ChatGPT plugin game, but was able to further familiarize myself with the ecosystem and hopefully help support plugin developers. I will definitely be continuing to play some of the games I’ve found and highlighted above. If you enjoyed learning about plugins, you should check out ChatGPT’s code interpreter, I wrote a short article walking through how to use it.
