When fixing Gyprock ceilings or saggy plasterboard, there are 3 effective ways of fixing these. The difficulty of fixing these rest heavily on how long they have been broken as well as the amount they have sagged from the roof.

Method 1- Reattaching the plasterboard. This first method involves the use of a screw to re-attach the plasterboard to the ceiling wood. Screwing the board every 300mm to the wood ensures that it is totally re-attached and should stay that way permanently. This method is most effective when the plasterboard has only sagged a few inches from the ceiling.

Method 2- Using battens as a temporary solution. The second method involves battens, which are long flat strips of square wood that are attached on the plasterboards to return them to their original shape. Conventionally, it is recommended to leave these for a week before any re-screwing should be done. In the event that the plasterboards have been damaged with the use of battens, they must be re-finished after the re-screwing process.

Method 3- Entirely replacing the ceiling. The third and final method is reserved for when the plasterboards are beyond repair. Method 3 involves taking down the plasterboard ceiling together with its cornice and replacing them with new materials.

Additionally, permanent timber or metal battens are ideal material to replace a broken ceiling. You can install these on the roof before adding new plasterboard and all its material. This allows you to avoid having to clean out any excess wood on your roof and it allows your roof to maintain the proper amount of insulation. The only disadvantage of utilizing this method is you may lose up to 40 mm of ceiling height.

Keep in mind that these three methods require you to repaint your ceiling.
